Non-Random Notes, With Updates And Forum Throughout Day

John McCain at his high school alma mater in Alexandria, Virginia.

** CLINTON’S FUNDRAISING DWARFED BY OBAMA. Hillary Clinton raised $20 million in March, half what Barack Obama raised. Now, key point. Obama’s total is usable in the primaries and caucuses. Clinton has yet to disaggregate her figure with regard to general election fundraising. So the reality is that Obama’s current fundraising edge, Clinton spin aside, is better than two to one.

** NEW PENNSYLVANIA POLL: CLINTON CLINGS TO LEAD. The new Insider Advantage poll of Pennsylvania has Hillary Clinton clinging to a slight lead over Barack Obama for the April 22nd primary, in which she needs a huge win to remain relevant. Here are the numbers: Clinton 45%, Obama 43%.

** HILLARY DENIES SHE SAID OBAMA CAN’T WIN. Well, she’d better if she wants to remain a Democrat. Hillary Clinton now says, contrary to the report of former Clinton senior advisor George Stephanopoulos, that she never said that Barack Obama can’t win the presidency. This stuff with the Clintons is getting quite tedious. Yet, they are not going away.

** THE DARRELL ISSA FACTOR. I like the San Diego congressman. He can be intimidating to some, not that I particularly notice those sort of efforts, which are essentially lost on me. He made the 2003 California recall happen — which, with all due respect to the currently writing dweebs on the matter — was a largely good thing, which all the actual principals now acknowledge.

But here Issa is trashing the victims of 9/11. With all due respect to the congressman, that is absolutely ludicrous, pathetic, and ridiculous. And, lest I be unclear — while I like the congressional medallion you awarded me — it is utterly preposterous and lame. I trust I have made myself clear on this matter.

** OBAMA ORGANIZING FELLOWSHIP. Here’s something interesting. Barack Obama is offering community organizing fellowships.

Obama, obviously, in addition to being the first black person to head the Harvard Law Review, was a community organizer in Chicago.

In my life, looking back, I would say the two key experiences have been being in the U.S. Navy and organizing for the United Farm Workers. Which may account for some hyperpartisan whiplash in viewing NWN. Which I was just discussing with a very dear old friend of mine.

** OBAMA RAISES OVER $40 MILLION IN MARCH, CLINTON STILL WON’T SAY. In the words of Obama campaign manager David Plouffe: “Senator Obama has always said that this campaign would rise or fall on the willingness of the American people to become partners in an effort to change our politics and start a new chapter in our history. Today we’re seeing the American people’s extraordinary desire to change Washington, as tens of thousands of new contributors joined the more than a million Americans who have already taken ownership of this campaign for change. Many of our contributors are volunteering for the campaign, making our campaign the largest grassroots army in recent political history.”

Total Raised in March: More than $40 million. They’re still compiling.
Contributors in March: More than 442,000.
First-Time Contributors in March: More than 218,000.
Total Contributors: More than 1,276,000.

The Clinton campaign will not say how much it raised in March. I’m told it is less than $20 million.

** WHERE THEY ARE TODAY.

Hillary Clinton has private fundraisers in Beverly Hills and other parts of Southern California.

Bill Clinton campaigns in Altoona, Pennsylvania and Pikeville, Kentucky.

Barack Obama is down for the day in Chicago. Obama will be in California shortly for a series of sold-out Northern California fundraisers.

John McCain continues his biography tour in Jacksonville, Florida. There he commanded the largest air squadron in the US Navy. Known, odd as it may seem for this fellow who was once known as the hardest-partying pilot in the Navy, as the “Hellrazors.”

** 24/7 LIVE TV NEWS FEED FROM RUSSIA TODAY. Russia has re-emerged as one of the world’s great powers. Click here for a live TV news feed on your computer, bringing you English-language, jargon-free, fast-paced coverage of global and Russian news from the new Russia Today channel.

You probably already know about CNN International, BBC World, and Al Jazeera. Russia Today, which also features culture, entertainment, and sports, is based in Moscow and is owned and operated by the TV Novosti division of Russia’s state news agency, RIA Novosti.

While it’s quite foolish to expect to see, say, criticism of Vladimir Putin on Russia Today, the channel is very interesting nonetheless. The NWN live link to RT does not constitute an endorsement of the channel’s views. It’s presented as an otherwise unavailable new media window.

** TRACK GLOBAL AND U.S. ENERGY PRICES IN NEAR REAL TIME VIA BLOOMBERG ENERGY MARKET WATCH. Crude oil is trading up in the $106 to $107 per barrel range on the renewed weakness of the dollar against the euro.

How does Hillary go on getting smoked financially by Obama like this?

In re the comments yesterday on Jon Coupal, the budget etc. Yeah just Goggle Mr. Coupal and tax loopholes and you'll see his op-eds, etc. ranting and such against any action that might raise revenue. Just his usual song and dance (and how much is he getting for fronting Prop 98?)

The budget is a mess. The voters, politicians, stakeholders, the media -- everyone shares some of the blame. This year no amount of gimmicks will suffice to create smoke and mirror solutions for a hole this huge--but how it the budget mess will be resolved is very murky to me at this point...

I just read some of the McCain emails I've been getting.

They are still very much using their "primary" rather than "general" messages. I expect it's due to fundraising.

When he talks about Iraq, he talks about "victory" and "leaving with honor." I don't know if that's going to get it done against Obama. "Security" and "global stability" and "responsibility" would probably be better.

Also, the standard cut-and-paste "tax and spend/big government" Democrat attack is going to need to be re-tooled.

Anyway, I hope they will be this tone deaf in the general.

The actual fragility of their positions has gone under-reported -- That is for sure. Nobody seems interested in taking them on, either in the papers or in the capitol. But then the handout crowd (education community in particular) is never challenged to show what they have done to demonstrate why they should continue to get the money and the automatic increases. Maybe that contributes to why there isn't an honest discussion about all of this anywhere -- neither side wants to cast aspersions on the logic and views of others out of fear that it might invite attention to the vacuity of the case to be made for funding their own factions. Plus, there is widespread ignorance of budgeting as a concept, as we Irish know from looking at the state of our own personal finances...

Brasky :

"HILLARY DENIES SHE SAID OBAMA CAN’T WIN."

At the same time Clinton denies that she ever said “Obama can’t win”, the Clinton camp comes out and says that it was Bill Richardson who actually said it.

You know, Bill Richardson is an experienced foreign affairs negotiator. It seems odd that would put himself in a situation where his intensions could be misconstrued by the Clintons. Yet, they keep yapping about Bill Richardson and how he somehow betrayed them.

Bill Richardson was my third pick for president (after Edwards and Obama). He’s smart with lots of experience and seems like a decent guy. I just didn’t think he could ever be president.

But in their jihad to win the White House, the Clinton’s are going to try and throw him under the bus.

Enough already.

Unequal laws unto a savage race,

I agree, but Arnold is still very much in charge.

I guess I would liken Arnold's "fall" to a college football team that jumps-out to an early 6 touchdown lead and then only wins by 4 touchdowns. They might have given-up some late scores, but Jesus, it's still a blowout.
